bullsnake in water

amelthia Dec 18, 2008 11:36 AM

I have a young (this is her first winter) bull that has spent the past few weeks in her water dish. She comes out for a few minutes once a week or so and goes right back in. I cannot find any mites and her scales look completely fine. She is also acting completely normal but has been off feed for about 3 weeks, this snake has never missed a meal up until this point. I have undertank heat for her that keeps her tank in the high 70s on the warm end - which she has not been using anyways. Her water is very cold so I'm wondering if she's trying to hibernate and if I should just turn her heat off..my apt is in the low 60s. Also, this snake should not be dehydrated, the humidity in my apt is quite high for some reason (over 70%)...my blood pythons don't even soak, although their plastic enclosures keep their humidity a little higher. Is she trying to hibernate? Should I turn her heat off? This is a pic from the other day..you can see the water droplets on her stomach, because, of course, she had been in the water.
Thanks,
Kim

Maybe she is preparing to shed. From the photo it is hard to tell, but her eyes look a bit like they are going into blue. My snakes seek out wet places when they are in shed, like their water bowls and moist sphagnum moss hides.

Thanks for the feedback. I also thought that at first but she shed not too long ago and has been in her water constantly for almost a month now. Also, despite my crappy pics (poor lighting) she is not blue. Since I cannot find any mites no matter how hard I try I guess I shouldn't worry too much. Other than staying in her water and being off feed she is very healthy, if you take her out to play she is very active, alert, etc. and she is not losing any weight. However, I'm wondering if I should take her water dish out and give her a smaller one so she cannot soak. The reason I say this is because a friend of mine had a ball python recently come down with scale rot and an RI at the same time and died (this was her first snake and there were some husbandry issues). I myself have never had any health problems in any of my snakes other than the occasional slight RI in my bloods which cleared up with some minor humidity adjustments. But I've also never had a snake constantly sit in their water for this long either. Since I am now paranoid, my question is, are pits as susceptible to scale rot as pythons? Is this something I should be watching out for?
