Lets try this again...new enclosures

Ghireptiles Dec 18, 2008 11:13 PM

Here are a couple of shots of my new Animal Plastics arboreal enclosures...

Without perches...

And set up tonight with perches, hides, water bowls, and atb's.

I am thinking of some artificial plants and I have heard both good and bad about them so I am on the fence. There are 8 set up all together and they are 2 wide and 2 high in two separate places in my atb room. Hope they serve their purpose this season!

Lookin good. I think it would be cool to do a similar perch set up with bamboo. I didn't really do fake plants before but I kind of like them now. The Dollar Tree here can make for some fun cage decorating. If they get too soiled I just throw them away. Its cheap enough.

I just ended up with 5 new ATBs unsexed from zoo stock so I might be needing to call AP soon. I am going to have to ask them on the price of these. Right now I am thinking of just upgrading some of my current snakes into something bigger and giving some of the ATBs the 4x2x2 cages. But I will stil be short. I really like glass and locks but I really like that slide out tray too.

Very nice cages Matt!

I think you should use some artificial plants there. It looks far more beautiful, and it adds a lot to the fun of keeping these snakes, since they´re display animals.
Its always nicer when it looks more wild. Take Mike´s new enclosures for example, they are very cool and beautiful to see.

One thing about perching. Do you often see them using these perches?
I ask it because I have an ATB with this kind of perch, and I very seldom see it perching.
On the other hand I have cages either with thick wood perches or thinner ones but more branchy, and in these enclosures I seldom see the ATBs on the floor.

Not that this matters when it comes up to breeding, but as Tree Boas, they were supposed to be off the ground.

Ghireptiles Dec 19, 2008 06:57 PM

The downside to the plants is the cleaning of them and the leaves they rip off...upside is more pleasing to the eye. I have always used wood perches but again...the cleaning is nuts with them. I have had pvc perches before and the atb's have perched as much as on the wood. Right now I have a calico red hot male perched on the pvc so I am comfortable with it.

I might eventually do something with planting though just because it looks so empty.

I agree. I like the look of a nicely displayed animal and I think it really adds something from a collector stand point. Sometimes it's not practical .

As far as benefits to the animal. I don't think it makes any difference at all what the cage looks like. Anything will work as long as the animals basic needs are met. Food, water and temperature. After that it's all for the keepers enjoyment. I' ve bred a lot of different stuff and it's all pretty straight foreword. Ernie Eison

wstreps,

Oh yes they can breed almost anywere if minimum conditions are provided. But it doesnt mean everything is perfect.

those things are very hard to evaluate.

I like to believe they feel better in a more natural enviroment (I do not provide it here, but maybe in the near future).
I enjoy a lot when I see natural cages.

But this is a very complicated question, and its up to the keeper. There´s no way to tell what is correct (so far).

wstreps Dec 20, 2008 10:06 AM

Leaving personal preference aside,

Feeding response , activity levels , breeding and general behavior are the only indicators we have to validate if everything is perfect or not. Observational study and the devolvement of our ability's to read an animals behavior is how we can determine what's correct.

Based on my experience (I first bred amazons in the early 80`s ,82 or 3) key behaviors in many reptile species are indistinguishable regardless of cage decorations. Natural settings are more fun for the keeper and look a lot better , some swear buy it but to the snakes based on many side by side comparisons , no difference. Animals that feel better perform better there would be a noticeable behavioral difference in key activity's if it mattered. A lack of consistency.

Specialized adaptations color , prey preferences , thermal regulatory practices etc. Evolved so the species can archive basic life goals under very competitive conditions. The use of adaptations does not make the animal feel good what makes the animal feel good is achieving it's survival goals , It doesn't matter how. Many wild animals prefer to take up residence in man made structures when their surrounded by their natural environment. This is because these structures fit their needs better. They would rather use a concrete and steel structure then live in a tree or under a rock the way nature intended . It's not about setting it's about usage. The un natural construction better provides for their needs then nature.

Snakes are 1 , 2 , 3 in their approach to life. Give them equal amounts of what they require and you will get equal results . On the other hand if poor temperatures, not enough water or food is provided the animal will not thrive regardless of the cage setting.

You made a very good point Ernie.

But I still think there are other things that can be considered. Although, we cannot evaluate these things.

In comparsion, we can make some animals grow much faster and breed far more in captivity that they would in nature.

I dont want to say that it has to be done one way or another. But it is always nice to keep these alternatives in mind, rather than just numbers.

they are very cool...
but I think they would look so much better
with real wood perches and some live
pothos plants.....I think it would a more natural
appeal and bettr showcase those killer Ammies of yours.

Thanks Norm...giving fake plants some thought but most likely after breeding season.

Kind of dark but at least you can see what's being paired for the season...

Solid yellow candycane male and tiger female

A pair of calico red hots! Both of these were born as red and white banded animals. All of my red and white banded babies turned into these calico animals...

That is the best Tiger pairing I have seen yet.
I love how clean both animals are, and I imagine racing stripes on a bright snake.
But that second pair of calico Amazons, I am going to have to email you about that pair. I jumped out of my seat when I scrolled to that picture.
They look awesome in those cages!!
Good Luck with those pairs!!
How are the babies from the last litter? I know you weren't sure about them as they seemed to be weak animals. I hope some of them pulled through for you.

I am pretty excited about the tiger pairing also and I was going to pair one of my candycane tigers with the tiger female but when I sexed them yesterday...both females?!? Some animals I just haven't probed knowing that I was keeping them and guessed on sexes and obviously I guessed wrong on those two...but not bad having two females that look like this!

There are two tiger babies...a paradox animal and a burnt reddish/brownish animal. Both ate for the first time last week so hopefully they will do well. I took this past season for granted and I will never do that again. Just when it seems so simple...it isn't. I am very happy with the caging setups and can't wait to have gravid animals basking under lights! I was in there a few minutes ago and everyone was active in all 8 enclosures but no breeding yet.

"...but not bad having two females that look like this!"

No Definitely Not, Not bad at all!!!

Good I'm glad you got two tigers going better than no tigers. Did any normals survive? I know exactly what you mean, and it's only simple when your on top of everything. As soon as we get complacent, complications almost always follow. Well if everything does happen for a reason, it's preparation for the killer season you're about to have.

I am definitely jealous of your new cages. I'm gonna want to know how they work out for you the next couple of months.
More pictures!!!

Bad breeding seasons happen to all of us. I'm not convinced it's always the keeper's fault. To me, a bad year just serves as a reminder to be that much more appreciative of the good years

Good luck to all of us this year!

Hey Matt:

Your new cages look great. Is the front door glass or acrylic?

Ghireptiles Dec 26, 2008 08:48 AM

Hey Steve,

Nice to see you here! It's acrylic but I am sure glass wouldn't be a problem...just a bit heavier I would think. They are working out great so far and the pvc is a breeze to clean. With amazons I get loads of practice with that!

Any new baby pics you could post here???
