For Chris Harper; Contact Paper

tortlemon Dec 19, 2008 06:29 AM

One method that a lot of Green Tree Python keepers have used is to line wooden cages with self-adhesive shelf liner, specifically the brand Contact Paper

Chris,
Where can I find this specific contact paper?
Thanks,
Russ P

I think KS is cracking down on posting links but I think you can find it at Hardware Store Dot Com. I have seen the Hunter Green in person and it looks nice.

I just woke up and was about to write "nice Indigo" but then realized I was looking at a spectacular Black Pine.

What is the age, length & weight of that girl?

I just went direct to your gallery but there was no mention of size or age.

Thanks for the quick response.

I purchased her in 2006 and never found out her age for sure.
Weight; never checked.
Length; If I remember correctly it was around six feet when I checked awhile back, I'll have to check again. She just came out of brumation. Last year(first year I bred her) she laid 13 good eggs that all hatched. I've been told that might be some kind of record for Black Pines.
Thanks
Russ

Chris,
Any idea if this contact paper is better than the stuff you can pick up at places like Home Depot, etc.
I tried some from Home Depot and it was OK except the adhesive wasn't very strong.
Russ

Chris_Harper2 Dec 19, 2008 10:49 AM

No idea. It's been widely reported that Contact Paper reduced the amount and/or strength of the adhesive they use on their product. I have not use that specific brand since the change so I can't say.

I just tore apart the last rack I built with Contact Paper and the bond is still very good. I applied it to unsealed luan plywood and it held up great.

Chris is right. Contact paper isn't what it used to be and some chondro keepers have gone to self-adhesive vinyl. I can offer a link if you want to email me.

Bart,

Have you used the vinyl? I have a large roll of it and it does stick well (although be be fair I have not used it in a cage as of yet) but the glossy look does not look nearly as good as Contact Paper.

I did see that one company is producing a matte finish vinyl. Based on the pictures I have seen it looks really nice.

I have also wondered about a layer of vinyl for protection and they a layer of Contact Paper for appearance. The CP should also stick better to the vinyl surface.

I have not personally used it for cages yet but have had it recommended by a few chondro breeders who swear by it. They did specifically suggest the matted finish. I agree, the gloss finish would not be very appealing. I have used it to cover the false bottom of frog vivariums though. Strong adhesive and very durable.

Bart

Chris_Harper2 Dec 19, 2008 04:06 PM

Thanks Bart. When I picture a false bottom I assume some sort of grating. Do you have a picture or a description of what you mean by a false bottom covered with the vinyl? I'm not building any vivaria with false bottoms but am curious to know more about what you have done with it.

I'm a lurker over at MVF. What breeders over there use the matte vinyl? I'd love to see a picture of it being utilized in a cage.

Did anyone notice that Chris' list of animals is a little longer?

Chris_Harper2 Dec 19, 2008 08:01 PM

Scary thing is that I would not mind adding more specimens of the last three species in my signature. Not sure how I'll accomplish that and stick with my resolve to keep my collection "small".

And cutting down on Gonyosoma is not going to happen

Actually I should say I would not mind adding more of the last three snake species in my signature. Would not mind another Ridgeback either but that is absolutely not going to happen right now.

Yup. Somehow or another he's actually in the upper percetiles for height, despite the, err, shortcomings his parents have in that area.

Anh was asking about you yesterday -- told her I had not heard from you in a while. Everything going somewhat okay up there? What day does Brandy get back?

Chris, I guess I didn't explain that very well. The vinyl is placed on the outside of the tank, covering the false bottom area of the viv from view.

Bart

Chris_Harper2 Dec 20, 2008 01:58 PM

Makes sense. And a good idea.

Do you happen to know off the top of your head what MVF participants are using the matte vinyl?

Jack Sadovnick off the top of my head. There were at least two others from MVF who stated they had good results with it but without doing a seach, couldn't be sure of their names. Seems fewer and fewer people are going the DIY route. Jack gave me a link to where he gets his but I rather not post it and risk the thread going bye-bye. As you pointed out, KS seems to be cracking down lately. Be glad to provide it if someone wants to email me. It comes in quite the array of colors although I think Jack just uses hunter green. It definitely is not as cheap as Contact Paper mind. I had considered going the MDF covered in vinyl route several months ago, dug up some of the threads over on MVF about the vinyl, and contacted Jack about it. I have since considered a different, less DIY, route but am still on the fence about what to do with my chondros. I would like to replace all of my cages (which isn't really that many) but with the current economical uncertainties, I am starting to see how I could get a couple more years out of them.

Bart

Chris_Harper2 Dec 20, 2008 02:37 PM

Yeah Jack contacted me a couple of years ago about using it. I'm guessing he used the same company I did.

For what it is worth, my vinyl ended up being cheaper than Contact Paper. And since it came in a 30" roll it was going to be even cheaper due to reduced waste.

I'm sending you an email.
