Another attempt to uncover the BLAZE GOINI complex....more ??s

Jeff Schofield Sep 09, 2003 12:51 AM

Hi, I know there have been several in the past to question the genetics of the "hyper-erythristic" goini but I think that some people dont believe it to be a gene. I have gotten some NICE blaze from Chris at Gulfcoast reptiles(founder of the morph) for the past couple years but have YET to see an adult....My yearlings arent as distinctly colored, but they were the "ugliest" of the 02s. Further, I have seen goini sold as BLAZE that are unrelated to gulfcoasts' stock. Is this a marketing gimic? Do others really offer their "blaze" as a goini equivalent of "flame" hypo floridas? Is this truely a morph or simply an extreme variation of a variable king? I think if its NOT a gene we shouldnt be led to believe it is. Anyone else have any BLAZE prior to 02?? How do they look? Please post pics if possible,Thanks,Jeff

I saw a lot of "blaze" goini on tables at the Daytona expo. But none were the true blaze that Chris and Sheila of Gulf Coast produce.
My opinion is unscrupulous breeders are taking advantage of the "Blaze" term while uniformed buyers see the name on the deli cup and think they are getting something special.

I Have asked numerous breeders for pictures of adult blaze Goini and even Flame Hypo Brooksi and never got a reply or a pic from any breeder. I think they are just nice hypo baby brooksi and nice Goini. As for blaze Goini being variable kings, There is now way in hell.

I must correct myself. A Goini is a kingsnake that is variable but not a Variable Kingsnake.

Hi, I know there have been several in the past to question the genetics of the "hyper-erythristic" goini but I think that some people dont believe it to be a gene. I have gotten some NICE blaze from Chris at Gulfcoast reptiles(founder of the morph) for the past couple years but have YET to see an adult...

Chris had sent me pictures of a group of these he had for sale last year and all the Blaze AND het for Blaze had the same amount of red. His Blaze had a reduced amount of black though and leads me to think his Blaze may just be Hypos. It wouldn't surprise me as I know they (Gulf Coast Reptiles) bred Florida Kings into Apalachicola Kings to produce Snow and Axanthic Apalachicola Kings. As for pictures of adults, someone sent me a couple of pics and I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post them here without their permission. Anyone know? IMO though, the adults I have seen were this dirty, muddy pinkish coloration and are quite unattractive.

Further, I have seen goini sold as BLAZE that are unrelated to gulfcoasts' stock. Is this a marketing gimic?

I've seen other ads for Blaze too and they do have that excessive amount of red like the ones I've seen from GCR so who knows. Adults are already out there so I assume other people have bred them by now. Then again, these kingsnakes normally have red in them as juveniles so people may just be selling them as Blaze as a gimic. I found a male out in the Apalachicola National Forest last year that when it hatched, it probably would have looked identical to what people call Blaze. It's at least a couple of years old now and had ALOT of red when I found him but most has faded away.

I can understand that somewhere there may be offspring that may be het or even double het but BLAZE have only been around like 2-3 years right? You may be on the right track with the HYPO thing though.....some of the strangest(most beautiful!)kings I have seen came from Mark Bell's Goini X HYPO brooksi...and these,in my opinion, blow away Chris' best BLAZE this year.Could it be that either the BLAZE arent as pure GOINI as we are led to believe? It would make sense that these brilliant intergrades were somehow related to the BLAZE phase. Could this/these HYPO genes be allelic? And yes, there are adult BLAZE out there now and I think quite obviously the reason noone has pics is that they arent nearly the color that they are "supposed to be". In Daytona one of my BLAZE 02s showed up on someone else's table(see my thread on stolen snakes)and because it wasnt as brilliant and there wasnt a connection with Gulfcoast it didnt sell for what they usually go for so I was able to afford it at the end of the show. Since then there are others marketing nice looking goini as BLAZE so buyer beware! LOL! That is if it IS a "morph" to begin with.....Jeff

I never get tired of seeing that picture...one of my favorite pics to see. So you have babies? I'm wonderieng if any are for sale?

Sasheena Sep 11, 2003 11:12 PM

Thanks, it was a fun photo shoot, though it wasn't a "deliberate" photo shoot. I was just cleaning her cage a bit, and before I knew what she was doing, she was up in my hair. Hubby saw her and snapped the photos. She was about two weeks before laying her eggs in this photo. (There was no danger she would fall)

She laid 9 eggs, one was a slug, all 8 hatched. One had "stuff" dangling from the umbilicus but it dried up and fell off. Sadly shortly after the first shed I found her dead in her cage. OF course that was the prettiest, she was near brick red with a stripe.

The seven remaining offspring are quite robust... VERY feisty. I am trying to find a good home for them (sell them) but in the meantime I'm just enjoying them. They've all shed two or three times, and yesterday I offered the larger hatchlings two newborn pinkies (downed em voraciously). They are quite a variety of colors/patterns. One is VERY dark, almost patternless, with a few stripes of slightly darker mingled in with the overall dark coloration. A couple of them are very red, with small black blotches, and a couple of them have larger blotches. Quite the cuties.
