Odors in Vision Cage

Omnivorous Dec 19, 2008 09:07 PM

So I have several leopard geckos. I recently got a Vision 221 cage for free so I decided to put 2 of my leos in it. My other leos are in individual glass terrariums and several in a large boaphile. They all have a thin layer of sand on top of wich I place cut tiles for substrate. I have noticed that the Vision cage seems to have or retain an odor. I have been ill lately and had to spend a few days in the hospital so their cages needed to be cleaned when I got back but it esd only a few days so I dont see how the Vision cage is retaining anything. Its not a foul odor but its not a pleasant roses smell either. I usualy place a little piece of paper towel on the spot where they like to poop and change that out every other day. I mean I am guessing its a poop smell but it might be something else I dont know but anyone know what I can do to keep it down or should I add an exaust fan to the back? My boaphile holds more leos thatn the Vision cage and it has less ventelation and doesnt seem to have the same problem.

Someone also suggested I get a small mesh bag and fill it with Activated Carbon then secure the bag to the roof or somewhere the leos cant get to it and wont accidentaly eat it. I dont know if thats safe for them or not.

Activated carbon is oxygenated charcoal to make it more porous and effective at fighting odors. Sounds like a good and possibly effective way to deal with the odor. Good luck.

I would soak the cage.

Maybe even add a little bleach to the soaking water.

Chemicals like bleach will not have any negative effect on the polyethylene.
