Question about Gaigeae

SuzanneG Dec 19, 2008 09:52 PM

Hey, everybody!
I got my Black Milk from Dave last October, and I had a few questions for you guys.
Since getting him, i've noticed that he loves to cruise. If he's not digesting, he's looking for a way to escape from his tub. He'll even try to hang on the roof and eventually fall down.
In his cruising, he'll oftentimes re-arrange his home. (He must not like how i've decorated! ) I've found his hide (which is a sock that has a toilet paper roll in it to keep it open) stacked on top of itself so he can't get in, as well as his other hide (a squished down toilet paper roll) up against the side of his tub.
So my question is, is this normal behavior for a Black Milk, or is mine just crazy? He's eating fine, and drinking on a regular basis. His poo looks like normal snake poo as well, so I don't think there's anything physically wrong with him. (Temps are typically in the mid 70s - it doesn't go below 72 or above 79.)
Thanks for the help!

How big is his tub? I find that my milks tell me when they're ready to move to larger quarters by cruising and moving the furniture. As soon as I move them to a bigger tub, the activity reverts to normal.

He was in a shoebox tub for the first 2 months that I had him. Approximately 2 weeks ago, I moved him up to a (I believe) 15 quart tub. It's big enough for him, but he's still doing the same thing.
I thought that might have been it, but he still hasn't stopped.

Maybe he doesn't like the hides you've provided for him? A paper towel roll, flattened and folded on one end, is much deeper, tighter, and more secure than a toilet paper roll. A small plastic cottage cheese container with a small hole cut in it and a moist paper towel inside can big a big hit for a young gaigeae also.

Just a few ideas. Love those black milks!

I will definitely try using a different hide or two for him. I've actually got a paper towel roll right next to his tub, so i'll try that and see if it changes anything. Thanks!
Yours is so beautiful! I love them in their color change. mine is already starting to tip, and his nose band is browning out. It's really interesting to see.

Hey Suzanne,

He is looking good. Not sure why is is cruising constantly. How often do you feed him and what are you feeding him per meal? Feed him a really nice, large meal, and I bet he'll go rest somewhere to digest.

First of all, i'd like to say thanks!
I've been feeding him 2 large pinkies every 5-6 days. He's about to get bumped up to fuzzies within the next week or two, though. (I'm going to try and find one on the smaller size in my stock, because there are a lot that could be considered hoppers in there.)
He does rest while he's digesting, but once he's done digesting he's out and roaming. Like I told mfoux, I just upped him to a new tub, so I don't think it's because the tub is too small. He was doing that in his old tub as well, so I don't think it's the new tub. I've got 2 hides for him in his tub (one is a squished down toilet paper roll - though I may try a paper towel roll and see if he likes that. The other one is a toilet paper roll in a sock - he usually uses that one the most.) as well as a heavy water dish.
I almost think he's just an oddball. His temps and humidity are good. (about 74 degrees on average, and 60% humidity.) I just don't know what it is.
