Need HELP!!!

exoticball Dec 20, 2008 09:35 AM

I just noticed this the yesterday but I figured I had better get some advice on it asap. I looked at may little pied and she looks to be swollen right behind the head, what do you think it is, should I be concerned, recommended treatment???

I have also sent pics over to my vet but I know it is always good to bounce ideas off of KS.

Thanks in advance,
matt

Sorry to hear that, I'm nowhere close to being able to help you on this but let us know how everything turns out.

Good luck

Looks like an abscess so maybe it can be drained and antibiotics would finish the rest.

The area there looks really red. Could something have happened to injure it?

jyohe Dec 20, 2008 10:09 AM

what kind of cage furniture is there in with this pied?

looks like it got it's head stuck in something maybe?...

rodent bites ,, I have never seen one swell more then a little dot...?

........hmmmm.......third "swelling" in this forum in a week...

I agree w/jyohe! It looks like trauma associated w/struggling of somesort! Cage furniture?

exoticball Dec 20, 2008 05:03 PM

that makes purfect sense now that you mention it, I have a few display cages that have double set doors on them and lately they have been trying to pry the doors open and I bet that is how it happened. I will be moving her to another cage asap, what do you think the vet will all have to do? Do you think she needs drained? Any way to tell if it is infected vs just brused?

I can't get to a vet until Monday so what should I do in the mean time. Also I was thinking I will skip feeding tonight because if she goes in on monday I do not want the rodent still in her system. Just for stress sake. Do you think she will need any meds?

I would definately hold off on the meal! I would keep her warm w/clean water and don't bother her, especially if you're changing cages! See what it looks like on Monday! It might just go down and the abrasion will come off w/the next shed! Good luck!

jyohe Dec 20, 2008 07:27 PM

can the head get stuck in between the doors?...
.....shouldn't......

....any hollow logs? etc?...

....I'd skip the vet and al...they don't do squat for you anyways...

......all you can do is let it heal and that takes time...

IF there is a hole that doesn't go away fairly quickly...it may drain , then you might need antibiotics....

as going away fast is not gonna be before a shed...the swelling should go down in a few days???...not sure...

Ditto on the vet, we only have one that does reptile within 100 miles of my house and he doesn't know hardly anything. Wish I knew one that did.

My initial thought was a rodent bite, but jyohe is right, I've never seen a rodent bite swell that much on a reptile (people - yes, snakes - no).

However, after looking more closely at your pics it is fairly evident that his neck was pinched by something (probably a failed escape attempt). If you look on either side of his neck he has a red line in the same location, each line is also the same width and runs at the same angle. Looks like your little buddy was pinched. Be sure the vet does a series of x-rays to ensure nothing is broken or dislocated.
