Copes Grey

Hi, I was hoping someone could give me a little info on a Copes Grey Treefrog that we have had since July 2008. Do they stop eating during the winter? He is kept indoors in a tank with plants, branches, and a substrate made out of ground coconut shells. He ate crickets and grasshoppers all summer long but recently has stopped eating altogether. Is that normal? Thanks for any help you can provide.

They do indeed hibernate in the winter in there native range. I would continue to offer a few food items, but remove any excess, uneaten prey so as they don't stress out the frog. You might consider hibernating your pet frog. For this, I cannot really help you out as some frogs are freeze overwinter, and others must find shelter below the frostline. Knowing this information for your Cope's is essential to a proper, healthy hibernation.

In the mean time, as long as your frog isn't losing weight, I wouldn't be concerned.

Ian
