PICS OF OUTDOOR BOA ENCLOSURES

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Dec 21, 2008 03:39 PM

Here are pics of our new farms outdoor snake enclosures. Only time will tell if these are successfull as no one has done it yet but I'm pretty confident it will be. Each enclosure is about 5' x 4' x 5'. They can get natural sun several hours a day if they want it. Here's a breeding group of Berry Isle Boas [Epicrates s. fowleri] basking today......TC...We have 18 cages like these total....

Homestead, Fl......TC...You can't go further south unless your in the Fl Keys...

Siegi Dec 21, 2008 06:55 PM

That sounds good.
I would love to live in such warm aria.
Here in Germany you have no chance to keep boas outdoors.
I´ve seen many snakefarms all over the world wich kept their snakes
outdoor in such cages like you have.

I, too, have seen many snakes kept outside especially in S. E. Asia.....TC

Congrats on the enclosures and best of luck with them!

Curious question, is there any supplemental heat for the cool nights or differences in seasonal weather patterns? I ask because I see the extension cords in the pic. Also, any plans to have natural plants, etc...?

Mike DeBruce bred Boas outside in Georgia several years ago. He didn't keep them outdoors all the time. Too cold for that. But he had good results in pens outdoors. He goes by "Mohaskee" on the forums. NIce guys loves his Boas and his 12 or so kids. Lots of kids!

Could not be more proud for you and Patty and Bruce, Tom!

I am trying to remember " the name Jeff brought up does not ring a bell, " but there was some guy that I talked to years ago from either Georgia or Alabama, that bred his Argentines outside and kept them outside all year around.

Says he built them burrows five plus feet underground and in the winter, they would go down in the burrows and of course five feet below is usually a stable 50 something degrees and on days were the sun would be bright in the winter, they would peek their heads out of their little holes that led to their burrows to allow the sun too warm them a bit.

He swore that it worked great for him and the Boas never got sick?

I just cannot remember who his name was?

I just remember how intrigued I was when I talked to him several years ago.

If it actually worked, Argentines would IMO be the only South American Boid that could handle that and be kept that far North.

By the way Tommy C., just for the record; I'd bet a lot of money that you will have great success breeding those puppies in those outdoor cages.

Hey Tom, There was a guy named Phil Churko(I bet you knew him) who used to breed Peruvians and he kept his boas outdoor year round in wire cages. Had a big group of beautiful specimens that he hand collected and carried back(all legally with paperwork) to Spring hill Fl. Produced many, many litters over the years and we were lucky enough to purchase some. So if he can do it year round outdoors in Spring Hill I'm sure you'll have great successes in Homestead.
Take care and best of luck. Andrew

Hey guys sorry it took so long to reply. Me and the guy that got me into snakes, Frank DiCarlo, bought a group of boas from Dr Bran Ritchie from UGA. They came with outdoor cages and some indoor cages. The out door cages where 9'x9'x8'. They where made of 1/4" hardware cloth in 3'x8' panels. The top was also hardware cloth. The indoor cages where made with exterior sliding glass doors that were sectioned off into 3 spaces. He suggested keeping the outdoor enclosure well shaded but still well exposed. The boas would go out when the day time highs averaged 80. Late April early May and then bring them in when the night time lows hit 50. We put very large hide boxes and used a "hog blanket" under one of them for heat if needed. We also had large branches and limbs which a couple of them seemed to like. When we first put them out we put the females in the big enclosure and we had one a little smaller for the males. Then in late August we put them together. It seemed the colder it got the less they wanted the heat. The other guy mentioned was Bert Langerworf. (I think that's how you spell it) He kept his Argentine boas out just about year round. I hope this helps, please fell free to e-mail with any questions and I'll try to help any way I can. Thanks Mike mohaskee@hotmail.com
