Alright here it is.
How important is the protein in rat/mouse food? I am currently using 18% for my colony and wondering if a higher protein will make a difference?

i dont know how the others feel about this, but i might do things a bit diffrent than others....i have the tendancy to feed my rodents meat scraps, say im munching down a steak and have some pieces left over, gristel and the likes, i divide it up amongst the feeder animals, any extra meat pieces left over from chicken (includeing the bones...calcium and marrow baby) for the mice, for the rats i will actually visit the feed stores and buy the smaller coww bones intended for medium sized dogs, there cheap here about $0.35 each, and about 2 1/2- 3" long i change out the bones every other cleaning, but there arent usually many pieces of bones left in there. this also keeps them occupied with other things than chewing on there cage/cagemates/babies/water tubeing or such. i will ocasionally throw in some "chick starter" the crumbles for the mice and rats as there growing also, its sorta like rodent crack (just in case anyone cares its also one of the best baits to catch kangaroo rats out in the desert...found this out doing my own little species studies on my oil leases) i dont really adhear to any feeding plan really, i breed about as many parrots/conures/cockatiels as i do snakes so i always have a abundance of parrot chow laying arround so thats pretty much what the rodents get to eat, lots of fruit, veggies, seeds, what not in there...i suppliment with some dog food to the rodents and all the above other items tell you what though i have some of the best looking mice (plump, shiny, happy and TASTY!) ever.

I use Zeigler Rodent Breeder rat mouse formula
18 / 6 %
....works for me but I also use dog food and corn and oats and at times millet ,sunflower seed and other stuff, dried bread,bones at times (minimal)...etc etc
......18 % will work for almost all situations.....it's a stable diet....
