Vertical Spaceing Needs?

Omnivorous Dec 21, 2008 11:58 PM

Ok so I had bought a 4'x2' boaphile the 1 foot tall model. I was going to house several leopard geckos in it but some are looseing a little weight. They arent sickly but have decided to purchase a Multi unit boaphile for them to house them seperately. Since I will have an extra cage I was thinking of getting a Mexican Black Kingsnake or a Grey Banded Kingsnake. I think the boaphile is large enough surface area wise but will he require a tank that is taller when he/she becomes an adult? Will I need to get a tank that is 1.5 or 2 feet tall eventualy? I am not sure how much vertical space Mexican Black or Grey Banded Kingsnakes need. I would rather find something else that is better suited to that tank than buy one and have to get a new tank. Its set up already with under tank heating, a fluorescent light and locks.

I keep a Grayband and California kings in 20 Long size, they never seem to climb at all when I watch them. Instead they seem to prefer to crawl on the substrate and into different hiding spaces. I use half logs, clay flower pots, and driftwood for these, and keep them on Cypress mulch as a bedding. Some might say that a 20 long is too small in the long run, but for my Graybanded it seems fine and my Cali's are not large enough yet to need another cage. They are each almost 4'. hope this helps

Neither of the snakes you mentioned need additional height. They will both, as pretty much all kingsnakes (and milksnakes) stay on the ground.

If you are getting a hatchling I wouldn't suggest putting it in that enclosure though. Start off with something smaller, closer to the size of a 10 gallon tank or plastic shoe box. Even though I feel bigger is better when it comes to enclosures, something that size was not made for a baby.

Good luck with which ever you choose.
