trying to figure out Flexwatt.

teaspoon Dec 22, 2008 11:10 AM

I'm thinking about making a rack and heating it with Flexwatt heat tape. What do I need to set up the heat tape? All of the thermostats that I found were really expensive(for me, anyway) Will a dimmer work? I realize that it would take more time to get the right temps set up but I've got more time than money right now (just bought a car and payed tuition within three days). What else do I need to set up the heat tape? I was looking at the beanfarm website but I'm pretty clueless with anything besides lightbulbs(it only takes one person to screw in a lightbulb, heat tape is another story...)

Since I'm posting I may as well ask this too, what could I make a rack out of that will not rot or get moldy with high humidity? I'm looking for something cheap that homedepot would have, and something that is easy to work with.
Any advice is appriciated,Thanks.

Go to the "wireing flexwatt" tab. I just soldier and insulate with silicone caulk, just be sure to air out before introducing animales.

Plywood will hold up to humidity for a long time if you give it a couple of coats of polyurethane, and of course air out before introducing animales.

You can use a rheostat with the flex watt, but you need an accurate temp gauge, like a temp gun, to check actual hot spot temps, then adjust it up or down accordingly.

Check the link for info on mounting and use, including pics-
