Can Chameleons get colds?

wALDOsLACK Sep 09, 2003 06:55 AM

One of my female veileds is sneezing or couphing several times during the day & evenings. She's been doing this for a week or two. Yesterday I noticed she had one of her eyes shut, but not all the time. It was shut in the morning. I thought it was shut because her eating perch is under a leave that was hanging down & touching the side of her head. Could have been, as her eyes are open every other time I've been in there. She's eating good & healthy otherwise. The sneezing worries me though. When she sneezes she sucks in her lower abdomen just in front of her rear leg. Then she gags, sneezes or coughs.

Do they need anything when they get this way.

Kept in a 1/4" wire cage -3ft tall (have a new aluminum cage 45" tall-havn't put it together yet). Dripper for water with twice a day misting. ReptiSun 2.0 uvb light w/60 watt heat. Feeding lobsters, crickets & mealworms. (other various roaches from time to time)& romaine lettuce most eventings. I tend to feed on the light side. 2-3 roaches a cricket & mealworm. When I have wax worms I feed one a day also. Herptivite & repcal-d3 are mixed together, I dip the head of the insects in the dust & blow off excess. (very light 10% coverage or partial coating) for this every insect feeding but mealworms. Her plant is a umbrella tree (cheflerra-sp). I've Heard mixed opinions on this plant BTW. She eats new growth from the plant.
I've had her for 4 or 5 months (she's probably 6 months old). Take her ouside every other week for the whole day. Clean & disinfect the cages then. Otherwise pick up droppings daily. She's almost full grown maybe another molt or too. 4.5-5" snout to vent.

Very aggressive eater. Will have her mouth open and ready to strike when anyone approaces her cage. Hungry all the time.

Thanks

Ww

They can get Respitory Infections. Is there stuff coming out of her nose? I'd take her to a vet if you can.

Yes they can get colds. They are called respiratory infections. Check if there is excess mucus or slimy saliva in her mouth. Does she gasp for air intermitently. Take her to the vet and get her diagnosed asap. If it isnt treated it will only get worse. Your vet will prob put her on baytril for a few weeks. Keep in mind that she wont get better on her own. The eye closing problem is a bad sign.

Take your cham to a vet ASAP they will need an antibiotic.
Also as for husbandry I see a couple of things you should consider changing.
I would switch to a 5.0 Reptisun bulb a 2.0 is not enough UVB for a Veiled
As for the 60 watt bulb there is no way to know if the basking spot is getting hot enough with that bulb. A great many things can affect the temperatures such as room temp, cage size, vents in the room ect.
The only way to know the temperature of the basking site is to measure it. I would get a reliable thermometer/humidity guage from a Walmart or Radioshak They usually have a temperature probe you can attach to the basking site and you can set the temp/humidity part closer to the bottom.
The basking site should be around 95F if it is not getting that high your Veiled could easily get an upper respiratory infection.
