Question about slit in crestie eggs

psychemjr May 24, 2003 09:52 AM

Hello, My first crestie eggs are about to hatch I think, last night I noticed slits in the eggs and stuff comming out of the eggs, this morning nothing else has happened. Is this normal? How long does it take. I am thinking they are not going to make it out of the egg. Does anyone have any thoughts on this.

Thanks

They will be out at any time. I would leave the eggs alone if you are not experienced with with this type of thing. If there was going to be a problem, then they would not have been able to slit the egg.
Congradulations on your new Cresteds.

It should not take that long. If it were me, I would carefully open the egg up and see what was going on inside.
Good Luck

I agree with David. Most Crested breeders I know call this FTD (full term death). The only advice I have received thus far regarding FTD is that it is possibly protein/diet related. This seems a bit strange as I know several breeders who do nothing more than feed crickets and carry a 98% hatch rate, and other breeders struggle with FTD on a consistant basis. I am still looking into the cause of this as there is no info, to my knowledge, available on correcting. My last FTD was on 5/24. Fully formed crested, completely dry inside egg with small remnants of yolk. I have pics and will post later. I am now in the practice of slitting the egg upon sweat activity at or over 60 days of incubation. Hopefully someone will release some information on this subject as it seems quite common and needs to be addressed.

This is an FTD that I opened about 10 minutes ago. Clutch-mate to the FTD in last post. Perfect development, however interior of egg is almost completely dry. I noticed sweat activity on the 23rd and should have pre-slit. These eggs were incubated at room temp approx. 73-77 degrees in perlite. Buy all accounts, they should have made it. If anyone else has experienced full term deaths, please post your experiences.
