How much should my Juvie Mali be eating?

Nicodemus Sep 09, 2003 09:16 AM

I got him a couple weeks ago and he's still getting used to his home, but I'm wondering if he's eating enough.
I leave a decent sized pile in the bowl (probably a cup of "salad" of various stuff, but he doesnt seem to eat alot of it.

I also had a full bowl of birdseed in there all the time as well. It looks like he's been eating a decent amount of that judging by amount gone in a week and fecal pellets.
Should I leave that out so he eats more greens?

I have a 1 year old mali and it became obvious that he liked the seeds more than his greens. I noticed that he didn't touch his greens all that much and ate mostly birdseed. I stopped putting in birdseed until he ate a good amount of greens. I offer his greens first and then if he's eaten a proper amount then I add some birdseed later in the afternoon. A lot of people say that you should leave a bowl of seeds available at all times but I can't do that with my uro since he fills up on that instead of the good stuff.

As long as he's still eating his greens, I don't really think you need to worry.

Hope this helps

...taking out the seed. Today I actually just sprinkled some on his greens.
Anyway, Do you think he might not like the vitamin and calcium supplements? I decided to experiment today and not put any on and it looks like he ate more than usual....then again the bird seed bowl wasn't given to him either...any other thoughts?

Thanks for the reply by the way

That's ok. Mine wasn't too keen on the calcium and mineral powder on his veggies either. He kind of got used to it over time. Something that may help is to sprinkle some bee pollen on the powdered greens. My mali can't resist a bee pollen treat
Another idea may be to lightly coat the seeds with the powder.

Hope this helps you out
By the way, glad to hear he's eating his greens

Just adding to already great advice. I'm new to Uros, but I have a solid knowledge of nutrition. A great new supplement you might want to try out is the T-rex sandfire superfoods Uromastyx formula. It contains alot of good whole food ingredients. Among them are bee pollen, hempseed meal, brewer's yeast, alfalfa...ect. It is actually a complete supp. containing macro and micro nutrients that is in powder form that is spinkled over your greens. I have been using the crested gecko diet, Leopard gecko supp. , and all 3 dragon supps. They are great products in my opinion.
