CAIRNS POST (Australia) 11 December 08 Croc killer on the loose
The killer of this massive croc, shot in the Albert River near Burketown, remains on the loose.
Despite extensive inquiries by police, the person responsible for shooting the 4.7m crocodile, suspected to be 70-90 years old, has managed to dodge detection.
Traditional elders found the dead croc in September. These pictures, which have been circulating by email, show locals retrieving the beast’s body from the river.
It is understood someone shot the croc several times and it sank to the bottom of the river before floating to the surface several days later.
The investigation was hampered when someone chopped off its head.
Burketown police said yesterday investigations were ongoing and officers were following a number of leads.
Crocodiles are a protected species and killing one can attract a $16,000 fine.
Community leader Murrandoo Yanner said the residents were still upset about the croc's death.
"We hope that no one does it again," Mr Yanner said.
"We thank the authorities for their efforts."
Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
