Mites...

DarkFaery8 Dec 25, 2008 01:10 PM

I'm wondering about the different ways in which boas can contract mites, such as different kinds of bedding, etc. Also, if one of the rodents you feed them has mites, can these also live on reptiles? And how do you get rid of the mites once you realize your snake has them?

Thanks!

Mites do not come from new/unused bedding. They come from other snakes and from previously contaminated cages, habitats, containers, and ancillary equipment. Snake mites can and do travel from one cage to another. Mammal (mange) mites do not feed on or prey upon snakes.
There are several commercially available mite treatments on the market. Follow manufacturer's directions. Make sure you completely clean and disinfect enclosure/habitat and contents. Use a dilute bleach solution. Rinse thoroughly. There are some aerosol miticides in in a spray can that can be used to treat habitat. Follow manufacturer's directions.

Wow that is really a more complicated question then many realize.
Snake mites only feed on snakes ,passive transfer can occur.
For instance your at a reptile show handle a snake with mites then handle your snakes . Transfer can take place. There are many other types of mites. Some of which will also host on snakes, possibly Harvest mites chigger type mites,Trombicula alfreddugesi in N. America.
Other parasites like Cattle Louse, Haematopinus eurysternus or swine Louse Hog Louse, Haematopinus suis.
I question whether or not these could host or temporarily host on snakes.
So I believe there are other forms of parasitic mites other than snake mites that could pose a threat.
I'm Not certain even about wood mites that could be in some bedding how they affect snakes. They probably don't have any affect on snakes . Although I can't be certain of that.
Seems to me that this is one of those ares that needs alot of research.
Merry Christmas.

Rodent mites wont hurt your snakes. I dont buy my bedding at stores that sell reptiles because I worry I might take home that one mite thats walking over the bag headed for another reptile cage. That might soung ridiculous, but I dont take chances like that. pro-vent-a-mite works great as a preventative as well as a cure for mite infestations.
