3 Legged Baby Pastel Beardie

ransomquota Dec 25, 2008 08:25 PM

My current experience with animals is cats, dogs, fish, horses and snakes. I know my basics on taking care of animals but George is my first Beardie. He was originally on sale at PetSmart but some how broke his front left arm, nobody in the store knows how it happened and I wasn't at work when he broke it. The vet had to amputate it, and his tail looks like it’s shriveling up so I’m assuming he’s going to drop it because he’s been stressed out, right? But now he’s up for adoption and I'm going to get him.

He only has the 3 legs; he’s about 3 or 4inches from his nose to the base of his tail so he’s pretty young. He only just broke it about a week and a 1/2 ago and the vet had to amputate it. The main things that I need to know are:

I know he likes to be on the top of everything but will it be harder for him to climb? So would it limit me on the tall things i can put in the tank? Or would he be fine once he knows how to walk with just the 3 limbs?

And will it be to hard for him to catch crickets? So should I just feed him mealworms (his favorite), other worms and veggies?

And is there anything else I should be awares of? Or know?

ive had 3 legged beardies come into my care before and i found that having 3 limbs didnt change them at all...they would hunt and run and climb just like any other beardie but i made sure his basking platforms were a little easier for him to get on...i personally avoid mealworms altogether and feed a mixture of crickets, phoenix worms (to young dragons) and silkworms as staples...mealworms are pretty tough to digest and can cause more problems than they are worth nd not to mention they arent the most nutritional feeder out there

I agree with the previous poster. You didn't say which leg he lost. But 3 legs are fine. You need to get him out of his current environment though. I'm betting the leg and tail injury are the result of another cage mate, and now he is even more vulnerable. Beardies do not drop their tails. It is likely you will have to have it amputated back to where it is uninjured.

I also agree that mealworms are a bad food choice for BD's. They are very hard to digest thus a high impaction risk. You could feed him some medium sized superworms instead.
