I have found drowned mites floating at the top of the water as well as in the bottom of the dish.
What do you want to do with the provent-a-mite that you ask if it is harmful to mammals? It isn't good for them to breathe it or have it contaminate the water. But other than that, it should be fine, unless you are planning to spray the animal with it, which I don't recommend.

because the directions say remove insects and amphibians from the vicinity. I took my spadefoot and put him in another room. I was just worried about my hedghog being in the same room.

Don't worry too much about the hedgehogs. I used to have a pair and I've read they're nearly impossible to poison. Cute little guys. I would remove their water though, to be safe. But the stuff doesn't seem to spread much, I've used it in a room adjacent to where my tarantula is and he's fine.
