Cheaper Aspen?

Helena1 Dec 27, 2008 11:31 PM

So, we all know about the standard, overpriced shredded aspen that is in the pet stores for reptiles, but I can't help but notice that there are waaayy bigger bags for waayy cheaper in the small animal area. The only difference is that its shaving instead of shredded.

Can this work? I didn't go and buy it for the reasons that it may contain cedar or something.

aspen is aspen.....shredded or flaked or chipped....
it's all good......

...depending where you live, there may be people near you that get big bales by the skidload....you could be able to get it from them even cheaper.....ask all the reptile people near you....

.....at shows you can pick it up by the bale....
it costs more....but you gotta do what you gotta do...

......newspaper is free usually.....

...good luck

Aspen has been available for small animals for a long time and is what reptile keepers have been using for years as well. A company decided to sell aspen snake bedding with a higher price to make money off the fact it is a good bedding for many snakes. Basically they knew it was being used by snake keepers already so capitalized on that.

I was just making sure that there was no little bit of cedar in it like the cypress has gotten at the garden places. I generally use newspaper, but if there are mites or anything or I just want to treat for that on a new snake, I use aspen b/c I use a bedding spray instead of the regular mite stuff. It works quite well, but a bedding such as cypress or aspen is needed for it.
