My GTF is bloated and inactive

ohiorabbit Sep 09, 2003 11:21 AM

Please excuse my unscientific terms and descriptions, but I don't know how else to describe my frog's behavior!

Yesterday I noticed my green tree frog was spending more time on the ground in its tank than usual, and this morning it was on the ground again, covered in dirt, with its legs sprawled out. I poured a little water on it and it moved slowly towards the rocks and plants. Since then it has moved to the back of the tank to a little mound of dirt and stuck its nose in partway.

Its body looks REALLY fat. Before it had a nice plump look, but it looked normal. Now it just looks bloated and uncomfortable. I've had this frog since spring and it has always been healthy and happy until now.

Here's the rundown:
Setup - 20 gallon tall aquarium with 1" of gravel and about 2" of soil. Large and small rocks, ferns, 1 1/2" deep water dish, climing twigs.
Diet - flies, crickets, spiders, moths, and whatever else we find around our house and yard. We don't spray any pesticides inside or out.

What's wrong?? Is there anything I can do to help?

Thanks for your replies.

You should get him to a vet ASAP. Something is wrong with him. It could possibly be dropsy, although I'm not 100% positive that terristral frogs can get dropsy.

Does this sound like an impaction, or a problem with dirty water or toxic exposure to anyone?

How often do you change your water and how large is your water area? Is this the only frog in the tank? Are there any fertilizers or things in your soil such as perlite? What plants do you have in the enclosure?

It is the only frog in the tank. The soil is clean -- we've never had problems before. It's plain, sterilized potting soil. There are ferns in the tank. The water dish is about 5" across and 1 1/2" deep.

Now the frog is stretching out long with its legs behind it and can't put itself right...

There is no home remedy that will solve this. You need to get it to a qualified veterinarian. Waiting any longer will only prolong suffering.
