cutting flexwatt

squidlyjoe Dec 29, 2008 09:58 AM

Is it safe to cut flexwatt anywhere other than the dotted line as long as I'm not cutting one of the black resistor strips?
Thanks

So long as the cut starts between two of the cross panel conductors its fine. The problem is exposing energized conductors via partially cut elements. There is no danger in exposing non energized elements. Some tape has a zig zag pattern, it becomes difficult but it is still possible to make less than full panel cuts.

Jo,
I assume you mean the 11-inch stuff.

How about using the 4-inch wide instead?

I have cut Flexwatt every which way one can imagine. As long as the conductors exposed from the cut are sealed with good quality electrical tape, it will function. As far as safety goes, it is as safe as you want it to be. If you expose conductors and do not seal them, then cutting Flexwatt anywhere but the dotted line is not a good idea.

They sell a form of the 4-inch stuff where you have no choice but to cut through the zig-zag heat traces. The instructions say to seal with electrical tape. It is the same principal with the 11-inch.

With the 4-inch-wide Flexwatt in this picture, one has no choice but to cut through heating element. No big deal as long as exposed edge is sealed with electrical tape. Cage is shown bottom side up.
