HEPA filter for rat room.

caz223 Dec 29, 2008 02:06 PM

I was looking for a way to reduce the dust and odor coming from the rat room, as whenever friends come over they remark about the odor (Even though I don't notice it.).
I had a 20 year old honeywell enviracare HEPA filter type air purifier just sitting in the closet, so I thought what the heck.
I use pelleted pine bedding so it gets dusty in there, and my vents throughout the house show dust.
I vacuumed the pre-filter, sat the honeywell in the rat room on a stool, and thought for a second on what would help. (I have all sorts of plug-in air fresheners, but they never seem to do much to help control odor.).
I took a refill from one of my air fresheners, and put it inside my honeywell and just let it do it's thing.
I came back 2 hours later, and the difference was unbelievable.
I called the friend that was the most vocal about the odor and invited him over.
He normally didn't even like going to that side of the house, and would gag when I opened the rat room door, when he was 10 feet away.
I had him INSIDE the rat room playing with rat babies with no complaining.
If you haven't tried a HEPA filter with a air freshener refill in it, try it and see if it makes a difference for you.

We just got one for Christmas and I agree, it makes a huge difference. We've raised rodents for years and it never occurred to me to try one. This year my mother in law asked what we wanted for Christmas and since rat/snake racks, basking lights, and other snake related items that we actually NEED were out of the question, I got the random idea of an air filter. I could kick myself for not thinking of it years ago. I'd definitely recommend one to anyone with a lot of critters.

...and see what a difference it makes.

the HEPA filter probably work fine without the air freshener... to be honest most of the air fresheners are just perfumes that overpower the stinks but doesn't actually remove them. They may actually cause harm to your rodents, acting as an irritant. I know they certainly irritate me. I can't have any of those air fresheners around me else it irritates my sinuses about as fast as sniffing battery acid would. (Like sniffing cocaine but without the high, or at least I assume inhaling a dry powder into your nose would burn like heck as I have never tried the stuff myself)

Carbon filters probably work best to kill or absorb odors better than any air freshener. I find a wide shadow bowl of plain white vinegar works great on absorbing odor and its incredibly cheap.
