New to Milks and i have a few questions

bigpapamcdaniel Dec 29, 2008 07:51 PM

I have been doing research for the last month on honduran milk snakes, however i still need a bit of clarity before i buy one next month...

What heating elements work the best? UTH, Lamps, etc? From what i have read it seems to be a personal preference, but im curious what you have had the best results from. Also, when using UTH and lamps, should you use the lamp on the same side as the UTH or the opposite?

Substrates: I know alot of people prefer newspaper for easy care, however i prefer a more naturalistic look. Ive read that Reptibark is bad for your snake. What are your thoughts

once again, any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated

don't know what size cage you are going for...or type?...

......but lamps will dry out the cage and lamps in general suck...

under tank heaters are ok if hooked up to thermostats or dimmers I guess...set them to what they tell you in here...I'd say 84...(warm side).......

heat one side and water on colder side....

...good luck....

If you're getting a hatchling, use a small UTH, so there's a warm /cool area. I don't use any heating for adults. My apt. doesn't get that cool. Bedding? Aspen works best. Feed inside a small covered shoe box you can leave inside cage, for babies, or adults.
Mine are all fed inside enclosure. For babies, a df. pink is left sitting on a coffee lid; adults get theirs off the forceps.

Unless you have a large cage, a heat lamp will not provide a good thermal gradient.
It will make too much of the cage too warm, without a cool area for the snake to retreat to.
Aspen and CareFresh are both good substrates that I'd used.

That came from the Boa Basement. I have a "low red" albino female to breed to it. Thought it would be an interesting project to pursue.
