Humidity? Long, but appreciate a read

johnholts Dec 29, 2008 08:51 PM

Hello,
I'm looking for a humidity source other than a humidifier that turns the room into a rainforest...I have a humidifier, it's turned down to the lowest setting already and the window still accumulates too much moisture.

Aside from using a humidifier in your ball room, what is an effective way to still provide enough ambient humidity for shedding, helping breeding when pairs are together, etc.? Does misting the aspen bedding (what I use) with a spray bottle when pairs are together effective? Maybe keeping part of the mesh top of each shelf covered, how much? I'd be interested in reading what other ways people have found to be effective enough.

Thanks, and have a productive '09 season!
John

Sounds like you're using a warm mist humidifier...have you tried a cool mist? The cool mist will keep a small room 60-70% without steaming everything, and you don't get all the grunge and mold inside the humidifier to keep cleaned out.

I use a crockpot. It's a good sized one kept on high setting. I do have to fill it daily. Seems to help with shed problems in winter when heat dries things out.

John: Have you considered using Cypress mulch as a substrate? I have been using it for 5 years now and if I pay attention and moisten the mulch during shedding time, I have perfect sheds every time. I've never had ingestion problems with it, mold is not a big problem, and it is fairly easy to spot clean when needed. I use the cypress mulch from Lowe's, in the $2.00 per bag price range. Good luck, and have a great season!

All,

Good point about the warm mist vs. cool, I'll switch it over and see what happens. I didn't think of that!

Cypress mulch is something I have been curious about, I 'll have to go to Lowe's or wherever and see what they have. Good to hear about no nasty bugs coming in with it.

Thanks again to all who responded.
