Hypo is an abbreviation for hypomelanistic or hypoerythristic or hypoxanthic, meaning lessened black, red or yellow pigment respectively. Other terms used to describe this somewhat interchangeably (not always necessarily correctly) are Amelanistic or Leucistic, anerythristic, and axanthic. The latter terms are more correctly used to describe an absence of the respective pigment, the former terms more correctly used to describe a lessened presence of the respective pigments.

The opposite terms, meaning increased amounts of the pigments would be Hypermelanistic (or Melanistic), Hypererythristic (or Erythristic) and hyperxanthic (or Xanthic).

Pyro is an abbreviation for the Arizona Mountain Kingsakes Lampropeltis pyromelana ssp..
