what kind?

heys!!
My little brother found a snake at a barn the other day, and i've never seen one like it before. we live in Mass so i've only ever seen garters, but this one had redish patches on it. It's pretty small. It's belly is white with black squares on it. Imma try to get a pic. i jus wanna make sure its not dangerous because he has been handeling it and stuff. Thanks!

here's a link you may be able to use if you come across any other snakes in your area. You might want to tell your brother not to handle snakes until he can make a positive ID...you have northern copperheads and timber rattlesnakes in your state too.
