I say just have a few handy. If a particular animal seems skittish or doesn't eat without one then use one, but if they don't need them and eat fine without them I don't use them. One less thing to have to clean if they don't need them.

i use flower pot bases unside down with a hole cut either in the top or a half circle cut out of the side in my racks and cages as well

I use upside down flower pot saucers as well, but I'm afraid to cut a hole in the top for fear of the snake getting stuck somehow. A pot foot or rock glued to the edge with aquarium seal works to prop up one side.
I have a couple with hides...small pythons I use them...at 1 or 2 years old I stop.....
someone mentioned once they do not use them anytime because they didn't want the snake to get used to using them...then have them taken away later...might freak the snake out and all..
in the tubs I do place a piece of cork bark for shedding aid and I place it like a foot from the rear of the tub so they kind of hide behind it....any little thing might make them feel safer...it might be like 6 inches wide x 10 to 12 long....flat more or less....

....dumbest thing ever created...
NO, not a hybrid....well....it is becoming one....
We use hide boxes in every setup, big and small. I feel hides are an important part of the snake's mental well being. It gives them a sense of safety and security.
Not offering hides because it is easier for the keeper, or less to clean, is a very odd way to approach animal husbandry. It is not about us, it is about the animals.
