OT need opinion

rainbowsrule Dec 30, 2008 06:12 PM

First, i think OT means off topic. Second, I have a chance to get 2 ball pythons, and a sand boa with cage, heating, water dish, etc. $150 for all of it. I just wanted to know if you had any previous experience with these animals and if you think its too good to be true. Anyway to stay on topic. Carlisle's doin' good

Thanks in advance

If they all have cages and things to put in them (water dish, heat source etc.) It sounds like a good deal to me. But like it was said before if you're not 100% about getting them and keeping them hold off. But if you do want them good for you on the great deal.

As has been said, I think the first thing to check is that you could be as committed to the snakes as they would require.
But, once that is squared, it sounds like a good deal to me if the animals are healthy.
Never had any experience with a sand boa, but do have the BP. She's been really good in the short time I've had her. Eats fantastically, it's not very difficult to achieve good temp/humidity conditions, and she is definitely more active during the day than I had anticipated, and appears curious when out being handled. So that's $0.02 toward a positive experience if it helps.
Best of luck with the decision.

I am going to assume the sand boa is the only snake with a cage and the ball pythons just come alone. No details on the size of cage but from what I remember of sand boas a 20 gal is more than big enough for an adult.

With a little research I found normal Kenyan sand boas go for about $60 CDN. Normal ball pythons range from $40 to $150 depending on age and sex...so for snakes along probably paying about regular price if all are babies. Cheaper normal ball pythons are captive hatched (eggs gathered from the wild and hatched in captivity then shipped over to North America).

If all snakes are healthy and well established and you have done research on the care requirements for both species, its a good deal if you are interested in these snakes. I have never kept sand boas myself but have read a little about them and know a few people here who keep sand boas and their care is pretty simple and they do eat mice easily.

I'd say do it as long as the snakes have their own individual cages for all three and are eating. I'm going through a nightmare with my Pastel BP right now because I think the guys who sold him to me lied about his eating habits, and now we go through weekly "assist feedings" which are no fun and really stressful on the guy. This isn't the norm but make sure it doesn't happen to you

Aside from that, they both seem like cool kinds of snakes, I'd prefer a Rosy to a Sand Boa personally but they still are cool. If you've got the room I'd say go for it, you could end up really liking these guys and at worst you can sell them (especially the female BP) down the road once they've grown to make room for more BRBs

Hey Danne, Sucks on the Pastel BP, weekly assist feeding = stuffing feeder head into snake throat and allowing snake to swallow. BP's are notorious sporadic eaters. Mine would go off feed for a few months at a time in the winter. Have you tried letting him get good and hungry? Maybe that would increase his feeding response?

Nothing to add except toi reiterate previously mentioned points....

ONLY if they are what you want is it a good deal. Not such a good deal if you intend to resell any/all of them.

ONLY if they are healthy AND eating!!!

ALL three must have individual caging. If the deal is for three snakes with three cages, then is a good deal. If the deal has less number of cages than snakes or inadequate cages that you will have to either upgrade or replace, then not as good a deal.

And yeah, OT is Off Topic, always welcome here!!!
