Ginormous Mangrove Snake

Rear-Fanged is dead so I thought I'd share these here! He's been working the ladies and his cage was totally trashed so I had to get him out for a deep cleaning. He was actually sorta'"nice" as he's usually pretty irascible! I'm 6'2' to give y'all some perspective. He weighs 9# or thereabouts and it was a chore to hold him up for these pics.

Did he hybridize that with an Amethystine python?! Never saw a Boiga with that girth or size before!

That's one frickin' monstrous sized Boiga. My only concern is the noticeable areas of skin between the scales which might point towards an overweight snake...but still one very impressive animal nonetheless. Thanks for sharing.

Rob, an astute observation! He is overweight and I've got him on a "diet"! He's been like this since I got him a few mos. back. Only 1 small rat every 10 days though he's refused food the last two times I've tried to feed him. I'm thinking its a direct correlation to breeding?? Also, if you look closely you'll see a bulge right above his vent....I'm concerned about it. Not sure if his fasting is symptomatic of this development or because females have been in and out of his cage for the last month.

The "bulge" didn't manifest itself until females were introduced.
I've also witnessed him draping his tail up high and "vibrating" it so rapidly its a blur....while the female was close by..he's never done this before either. Pheremone "wafting"??
Thoughts?

Bill,
What time of the year did you introduce him to the females?

I started 3 weeks ago. I lost one male to cannibalism w/a different female..she was maybe 10% larger than he was! Since then I've been a bit gun shy! With this giant male I'm not as concerned 'caused like all males, once she's in there all he's interested in is mating..plus I make sure both have been fed before introduction...well the female since the male stopped feeding.
