How to stop mother mouse from cannibalism

rudedogsurfrat Sep 09, 2003 01:41 PM

How do you stop this in a mother. I have a few that always do it and a few that never do it. What is the problem?

I'll give you some advice, take it or not it is up to you. Matters not. I'm bummed lol. Anyways, here is a list that might have caused that.

1/ Not enought food?
2/ Mother mouse sensing disturbance?
3/ Mother mouse know it is her babies by smell so if you touched them that might be the reason?
4/ Take out the other mice?

Have fun and good luck, mice are savages sometimes.

Add to that list..

Maybe not enough protein?
Female may have been stressed by their environment (Ie too much traffic, too many people peeking in.. or just one peeking in too often)

how to stop it?

If you can isolate the reason and fix it.. then you're good.. If not enough protein.. try adding a bit of chicken or some other meat to their diet or dog food with a high protein content

If stress.. give her privacy.. check your mice once or twice a week and leave them alone save for feeding the rest of the time.

I'll try the protien thing but it is gross to think that she needs protien so she'll eat her young.

Oh well, go to www.rotten.com you'll see human sickness...

Oh yea, if you just ate don't go there....

Thats just life, its survival of the fittest. Humans do that in different ways. Think about that. I'm going to go eat some mangos brb.

It isn't sick...If the female doesn't have enough of the vital nutrients in her system.. she'll often canabalize a litter because she can't feed them. Milk production requires high protein levels...and the way nature works is to keep the older, breeding age animals alive while sacrificing a single litter to retain their own health so they may breed again when times are better. I'll almost guarentee if you up the protein in their diets.. meat or dog food, you'll see a dramatic lessening in cannabilism.
