Are these cracks/chips normal? Do I need to rush it to the vet? Thanks for any help!

I believe that is caused by mites or some REALLY tiny bug or insect. My guess is that when they burrow into the leaf litter they are sometimes exposed to this attack. I don't believe there is any cause for concern unless you see bleeding or any oozing of fluids from the wound.

no bleeding, oozing or irritation, just dry skin (or whatever is under shell). Would you suggest any topical treatment or just leave it alone?

Best regards,

Jason

I would leave it alone if there is no sign of irratation. What you are looking at is bare bone. Eventually the bone will secret a new keritin layer and the bone usually flakes off. No big deal.
Do not take my word for it if you are at all concerned. You should seek the advice of a vet or a tortoise keeper that has experience with this. They key is that it is dry and not showing any signs of infection which from the pictures does not look like it.

OK, I will try not to stress out to much. I am going to see Dr. Peckham this evening to get the final word on whats up. I have been doing a little research on shell rot and have got myself all worked up. Why cant people ship healthy animals like they guarantee? Thanks EJ,

Jason

I really don't think you have to worry though. If you've got a good vet, he might look at it for nothing. If it is what I think he should be able to tell at a moments glance.
Good luck.
