water heaters

binkybear13 Jan 01, 2009 12:29 PM

I was wondering what is the best water heater to use with a young caiman. I am moving my little guy into a larger tank and will slowing be adding water but to start with it will be roughly 50-75 gallons. I need something tough and won't break any suggestions.

We use titanium heaters connected to a back up temp control/thermostat - works great and we don't have to worry about flimsy glass heaters breaking. I invested about $100 for these devices and it was well worth the initial investment.

I have used the marineland tank heaters which are made of hard plastic for my young caiman with no prob and the 75 gallon one is like $30.

Yes, we have a couple of those in use too and they seem to work fine. My biggest fear with any water heater is the chance for overheating even with thermostats - so many prized animals have been fried from these devices malfunctioning. A friend of mine in Texas who keeps a number of fly river turtles told me about a simple solution: He places undertank reptile heaters to the bottom of the tanks from underneath and then hooks them up to old fashioned rheostats. He claims he can reach any desired temp needed w/out the worry of overheating. I might give it a try.
