A small find...

snakeman729 Jan 01, 2009 03:10 PM

On vacation in NC around late December we had a warm snap that brought temps to around 74 so i figured i would go out and do a little herping in a wooded lot around the house i was staying in.

Here is what I found. Nothing big, but a herp none the less.

Alantic Slimy Salamander (found under rotting log)

Cool find, I dont think I've ever seen one of those. Are they common?

In my opinion, they are the most common salamander in the piedmont. I am a snake kinda guy myself so i dont go salamandering that often but when i do happen to stumble upon one, its usually a slimy.

By the way i really enjoy reading your posts and viewing ur photos keep em comin!

Thanks! I know what you mean, I'm a snake guy myself, but finding tiger salamanders & northern long toed salamanders is always a real treat for me because they arent out & about all the time. Thanks for the compliments on my pics too, heres a few more.

Yeah a tiger sally would definately be a real treat for me too! ha well thanks for the pics i love the plains hog. Where I live in South Florida for some reason i have never seen an eastern or southern hognose snake... Maybe one day. Whats the temperature like this time of year in your region?

daneby Jan 02, 2009 10:42 AM

Right now its arround 30f, & has been between 15f & 40f for the last couple weeks. The 2 weeks before that were between -30f & -5f, with -50f windchills. I wont be herping for a few months.

Oh ok... It hasnt gotten below 42 in south florida where I live yet its usually around 70-80 high. For some reason i still dont see many herps this time of year...You ever been herping in florida?

daneby Jan 02, 2009 04:46 PM

No, but I hope to soon! Its just so hard for me to get away (snake collection, job, money, you know), but as soon as I get a chance I'll be there.

Yeah i see what you mean... Well if you go to the right places in south florida like the big cypres swamp or everglades you will most likely be pleased with what you get. Among what types of snakes are in your collection?

daneby Jan 03, 2009 12:16 AM

I have a quite a variety, but mostly locality BCI, hognose, & milks.

Thanks for posting all the eye candy.

daneby Jan 14, 2009 10:32 PM

Thanks!
The hogs are my favorite MT herp too. They sure arent easy to find in this part of the state.

I wish I could find them around here even if they were scarce.
all that we have locally is prairie rattlers garters and a few different amphibians.
