Feeding problem

jessicarenee Jan 01, 2009 04:47 PM

I've had my male python since November of '06. He's 2.5 years old, a nice size, and always been a big healthy boy. I've never had any problems with him taking mice since he was 4 months old, even when he was in shed. I gave him two mice a month ago, he killed both but only ate one. He hasn't eaten since. He shows some interest in the current mice, watching them a bit but he quickly loses interest and goes into his hide. I've never had him refuse live prey before. He's also avoiding his heat source in the tank. He's lost just a little weight but is otherwise fine. Does it have something to do with the season or is he just making me worry?

It may be due to the season. Will he only eat mice?

As long as he looks otherwise healthy and temps etc are good, I'd guess that he's getting ready for breeding.

You may be able to get him started feeding by giving him a different food item (like maybe a live rat pup), or changing his surroundings (like give him a hide, or minutely adjust humidity/temps). Most of all, don't stress unless he looks sick or is really losing weight. He'll come around, but it could be a while.

LOL yeah hook him up with a hottie female! I agree as long as he's not losin weight drastically he'll be fine. BP's are notorious for hunger strikes. One of my females always shuts off for 7-8 months around this time and I've had her for 8 years so you should be alright.
