Mangrove Snake Sex Organ Area Swollen

vegasbilly Jan 01, 2009 07:56 PM

Don't usually see that for a title huh? LOL My big male Mangrove Snake has a huge swelling right below his vent where his sex organs are. This developed immediately after the introduction of a female and heavy courtship on his part. No copulations have been witnessed to date. She's been in and out for 24hr periods for the last 6 weeks with 3-5 day gaps between meetings. Anybody ever seen this before?

No I havn't, but I would get it examined. A vet might pop the hemipenes with a saline injection to examine them; perhaps they are swollen from an injury while being used. What substrate was present? Perhaps some stuck to the hemipenes while being retracted?

Good luck with this

No substrate..newspaper. I figure its either the hemipenes or a mustgland..I'm going to explore a bit w/a small probe and see if any puss comes out...which would definitely indicate an infection.

Just remember that the puss would be a solid. I would expect just swollen, inflammed tissue; thus you wouldn't find much.
Good luck; let us know if you find anything.
