Happy New Year! to the field herpers!

antelope Jan 01, 2009 08:52 PM

Went out today on a dare and wouldn't you know, it was rainng herps! Well, not raining, but they were out in abundance. I feel for all you Northern herpers but heck, ya' gotta move to where the herps are, lol! I went out on a search for the first hot of the year and ended up scoring pretty well. last night it was in the forties but I woke up to greet the beginning of mid eighties day! Flippin' time! I hit the spot closest to me and found the first toad and snakes of the year, a Gulf coast toad (you'll never get me to change, NEVER!) and a desert king, and she is a looker! The next spot was a lizard bonanza, with only anoles and ground skinks seen, but rose bellies and Texas spiny tree lizards are usually found here as well. At the bottom of the pile was a juvenile coral snake, so the hot was in the bag. I next went to the Island to see if I could be any luckier, and I saw a few more herps, an intergrade milk and a dead atrox. All in all, a great day for winter. Hope you all had a great new years day! Pics comin'!

Next, the Texas coral snake. I have more herps but no more space! Well one's dead and the others are the most common toads here. Enjoy and happy new year!

Sweet copperhead! You might have said already, but what part of the country are you in?

Up in the Northwest, we don’t get the herp variety you guys have farther South, but we do have some good looking garter subspecies. They’re cool snakes to catch, as long as you don’t mind your girlfriend’s reaction to your new scent.

Ahhh musk.

Here’s a couple of Oregon red-spotted garters I caught near Molalla, OR. I don’t normally collect, but I kept these males for a few days while unsuccessfully herping the area for a female to breed them with.
