Definition of Power Feeding?

Corvid Jan 02, 2009 06:20 PM

I am curious to see everyone's opinion on WHAT power feeding is. Size, frequency, both, others?
From everyone I've spoken to recently I need to be feeding my '08 babies more.
I'm considering feeding more frequently, but want to know where the line is between feeding and power feeding.
I'm not trying to start a debate on whether or not Power feeding is OK, I just want to know Your opinion on WHAT power feeding is.
Thanks!

maintenence feeding is feeding just enough to keep it alive...like one mouse every 2 or 3 weeks

feeding is like one mouse per week of correct size, but not too big..

oh...this is for like baby ball...100 gram-200 gram or so..

feeding well...like I try...is like one mouse per 4 days ? let's say.....

power feeding is feeding too big of a meal like every 3 to 5 days ....like instead of one normal mouse...a small hopper rat...( now hopper rat is all different sizes...let's say a hopper is the size of a large been bred alot mouse...months old and fat )......feeding this large meal like too often...

.....feed well.....not too little...not too much...

.if the ball looks nice and well fed...not skinny....not looking like it is going to blow up......like it hasn't defecated in weeks....boom....LOL......blow up snakes are funny....

I've got several 07s that are 800-1000 grams...they've eaten 1 appropriate size rat every 7 days...no need to power feed. I do see more consistent feeding with f/t feeders.

I got a follow-up to this. What's the deal with some '07s being sold that are around 300-400 grams? I guess they could just be really really picky feeders, but at that weight, I feel like the feeding has been cut back. I mean, I have '08s here larger than that, and they have not been powerfed at all.

although I'm sure there are some that are just slow growers or picky feeders - I'd bet there are more that are maintenance fed.

I'll admit, when I started I didn't feed enough. The first time I started feeding once every 4 days it felt like I might have been power feeding. Seems to work good for me around two mice every 6 days for a 150-300gr animal. All depending on the size of the animal of course.

Exactly. I'd definitely be nervous getting a yearling at a size I felt was on the low end. I know there are those notorious picky feeders and slow growers out there, but either way, I'd feel like the seller wasn't being totally upfront about something. Either it was being fed too little, in which case you're not actually any closer to breeding than if you got an '08, or someones just trying to move a picky eater.

That's very interesting! I feed live and I find mine eat more consistently on live.

As to the original question - I offer my hatchlings up to 500 grams an appropriately sized rat (be it pink/fuzzy or small) every five days. After 500 grams I feed every 7.

i have 07' 1.1 het albinos...........the male is about 800g while the female just hit over 500g.

now i also have several 08' that were born in July that are over 500g themselves.

i feed heavy ONLY if they want to eat. i offer if they take it so be it if not i give them a few days to decide it over.

some snakes grow fast while others take their time that's just how it is.
