Sicknesses and eating....

peregrinefalcon Sep 09, 2003 02:57 PM

Hey everyone! Just a quick question... I'd like to know if there is any diseases in blood pythons where the snake will continue to eat if they have it? And what are the symptoms of them?
Thanks!

adam,

are you asking this Q out of curiosity? or are you worried your snake might be ill?

No, lol, my snakes are perfectly fine! I just wanted to know beforehand in case it happened in the future. Just planning ahead!

I took a large boa off someones hands-and i new it was sick. It had a pretty nasty RI and it still ate-a lot. When I got my blood python I was a little "over-zealous" about humidity, so he got a little belly rot. I took care of it well, but he still ate like a cow. Now the other day, i saw an adult blood with black mites and it was pounding rabbits. So to answer your question, yes they will eat if sick. But sometimes they wont. You really have to be the judge..

There are so many illnesses, and these animals will eat. Take coccidia for instance. Very common especially in wild caught animals. I believe they are a protozoan.
Worms, snakes will eat with worms also. Unfortunately these are transmittable to snakes and people also. What I usually do is get a fecal done 2x a year. I think thye can also get worms from prey animals also. It's better to be safe than sorry.

that's why we should feed frozen thawed, although I don't, I use fk. I need to switch over some time soon, so my reptiles don't catch anything through there prey.
