THE OBSERVER (Gladstone, Australia) 01 January 09 Cool? Problem is the snake wants it too (Nathan Paull)
Gladstone's residents are not the only ones seeking refuge in air-conditioning around the region this summer.
According to licensed snake catcher Kris Foster, cooling systems are one of a number of reasons snakes are attracted to suburban areas in and around Gladstone.
“Snakes don't sweat like you or I, so they need to find other ways to cool off,” he said.
“Often they will sense cool air coming through a cat flap and push their way through, or even use a leaking airconditoner as a water supply.”
Mr Foster said Gladstone's warm climate means snakes do not hibernate, but are active all year long, with September to April accounting for the most snake activity.
