Sick Leo??????

jccretarolo Jan 04, 2009 09:07 PM

I have 2 females that live in a 20 long tank. I use paper towels and they have a moist hide on the warm side (temp is 88-91) and a dry hide on the cool side (temp 65-75) they have a small dish of calicum at all times and they are fed crickets and mealworms (I have tried superworms but they won't tuch them).
One of the girls (Eagle) is about 4 years old and in great health. The other is the one I am concerned about. Spot is about 5-8 years and has been shedding a lot (every few days to every other week) she has also gotten fat. Mostly in her belly but also her tail has become very large. She has not eatten in the last couple weeks but I'm not that concerned as she is not thin.
Any ideas would be great. And as a side note they have been living together for almost a year as I got them and kept them in there own tanks for 3 months before introducing them to each other. Also they have both been having normal poop every other day as they have from day one.

Are you sure that the other leo is a female?.

If it is a female, I wouldn't worry yet, about your other female, she sound pretty good in health matters.

It is said that a female can have an egg or two without being with a male, but they wouldn't be alive inside.

Try sticking only regular sized mealworms in the tank or crickets.

If you get to concerned, put her in a tank by herself and see what happens.

Her body weight sounds good to me though.

I would say, to just keep observing, and not to worry at this point, yet.

I'm sure they are both females and the humid hide has peat moss in it so if there are eggs she has somewhere to lay them. I did wiegh them and Eagle the younger one is about 60grm while Spot is about 90grm. They mostly eat crickets dusted with T-Rex Leopard Gecko Dust (dusted 1-2 times a week) but I also offer mealworms (again dusted, but every feeding) as Eagle prefers them and Spot prefers the crickets.

Sounds to me like what you have is just natural, winter cool-down adult leopards go through. Almost all of my adults are going through this right now also. It is just a part of their yearly cycle before the breeding season. Like stated before in the first response, no worries until she starts losing weight.

Thanks for the help, I thought that might be what was going on. I have one more question though. If she is going through a cool down woudn't she be on the cool side of the tank? She has stayed in her humid hide and at the last check it was about 85 inside. Also she has started to lose a little she is down to 87grms but that doesn't worry me as when I got her she was 95grms and she is as normal as a leo can be. She is the shorter of my 2 leos and outweighs my other girl by about 30grms still.
I'll try to get photos soon as I think a little weight lost will be benifical in her case.

there food should be dusted everyday, and keep a cap or something of straight calcium in there tank all the time, they will like it, if they need to.
