AUSTRALIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION 03 Australia 09 Top End residents put on cane toad alert
The Lord Mayor of Darwin and Frog Watch co-ordinator Graeme Sawyer says cane toad populations across the Top End could explode if people do not remain vigilant against the pest.
Mr Sawyer says the animals are a serious threat to native wildlife, and the wet conditions at this time of year make it easier for them to travel and breed.
"We are already losing lots of our goannas and we still have got a few goannas and stuff around Darwin cause people have done such a great job so far, but we have lost some," he said.
"But the big danger I guess in letting cane toads breed is we risk losing our frill necks (lizards) as well."
He says the most humane way to get rid of the pest is by putting them in the freezer.
"Cane toads are OK to handle, you should wash your hands afterwards, but the easy way is to just to get a plastic bag, a shopping bag or something like that," he said.
"Put it over your hand like a glove, grab the toad, turn the bag inside out, tie it shut and put the toad in the freezer."
