Weird records keeping question

brianlovescheese Jan 04, 2009 11:30 PM

I was browsing a breeders site and noticed they had kept up with stool records for all of their animals. I've never done that, does anyone else? It really doesn't seem like it would be worth the effort of writing it down but maybe I'm wrong.

i have a card for each animal, i write down feeds, sheds, defecation and any other things i note. The more snakes i have, the more i feel its important. One may not have eaten the last week, or deficated for a month etc etc. With a few snakes, its easier to know which if any are having problems.
Any snakes that i sell aswell, get sold with these cards, so people themselves can see how the snake has been eating, acting etc

Well put, it also lets you have an idea when the next time they might or should shed especially if they eat or they don't eat, for breeders it helps them know which animals go and which ones don't go, which ones have bred and which ones haven't, especially if you have 100's of snakes and you're telling me you're going to remember which ones bred and which ones didn't? i highly doubt it. Put it this way, do you really need to check your bank account statement? Just something to think about when you have more pets or inventory. Good question though!!!

Well I keep records of everything but stools. So it looks like I'm going to have to edit my file to include that.

Thanks

John your wrong about the which ones have bred and which didnt I have just over 100 snakes about 120 and I remember which go what they were bred to maybe not how many eggs were produced but never the less once you get up into the few hundreds I feel you may have a problem remembering. Same way as I remember which animals eat which size food and the type. And I have been to a few of the bigger breeders places and they dont keep any cards that Ive ever noticed.

gotta say too, im very glad i keep records but it does seem to take a little bit of time. During feeding time, would be much quicker, just putting food in each cage and so on. But i take the time, to list what each eaten etc. Even though i know all their habits anyway. Have wondered what the breeders with thousands of snakes do though, if they do keep records it must be had to stay on top of them sometimes.

I log weights, dates fed and what the food item was, shed dates, elimination dates (poohs only, not pees)and when I do a complete tub cleaning. I only have 26 ball pythons and 6 corn snakes, though. It really helps me with knowing when to expect a shed coming, especially since I do handle my snakes and I have a few that get really pissy when they are just going into the cycle. It also helps me know if one may be getting constipated and, not so much remembering the food item, but how long it has been since they have eaten, especially for the picky guys.

I think that this highly varies for every hobbyist/breeder. I can say that I have greatly appreciated opening my shipping box with a new purchase and found the records with the snake. Of those that I have purchased, not one logged eliminations- I think that may be a little OCD on my part. Mostly sheds, weights and feeding dates.

I know what you mean, I'd love to buy one that came with records. That hasn't happened yet though but it would be a great relief.

feeding sure, but defecation is a bit obvious. snakes are tubes with a hole on either end. it goes in, it goes out. the thing is it's pretty hard to miss a snake that is backed up as you can see it and you most definitely can feel it.

if you think a snake looks like its carrying a bit of extra gear in the rear, put it in a large enclosure to get it moving and exploring or a bit of a warm soak.

i used to keep basins so i was used to the get it in the shower to deficate routine, but i've never had a ball need this sort of thing... though i can understand impactions do happen on occasion for various reasons with the rare ball python here and there. but it does seem far reaching to need dumping records.

i've only ever had one at any time, but I can sure see the need if you have more than a few. And it sure comes in handy to get a log from whoever you get your snake from regardless of what info they log or don't log. If that makes any sense.

I don't bother....they go when they go

I DO write down food and sheds and what I bred them to...that is really important....I remember what they bred till that time when all the eggs are in the 'bator and I then forget...just one or two...but they might be the important ones....

...I don't really care about sheds...or weights....

all I REALLY need to write os what they ate.....

..all up to you....
