New Rack build

brick1 Jan 05, 2009 09:30 AM

well this is what i spent today doing, building a new rack. Had looked at some to buy, but all had tubs that went in long ways, which isnt really appropriate for the size of my room. These tubs, are approx 96x55x18cm, and think will be sufficient for everything up to and including adult males. I have made this one, that is 8 tubs high (could have gone higher, but didnt feel i would safely be able to get an adult snake out of the tub if any higher) I am halfway thru another one, that will go next to it. The other side of the room has eight 4x2x2 cages. Eventually these will get changed, as with a bit of design, and fitting i think i can double that room to 16 cages. Beside the 3 new racks, is my freezer, with another one coming tomorrow to sit on top of it. Thats it, i cant fit anymore in there, so thats my limit for snakes once filled up. The smaller rack fits 33 yearling tubs though, so even with babies, i should be fine.
Racks made out of melamine (well i think thats what it is, only know the finnish word for it), with a plywood backing. This is what the original rack is made out of, and seems to be fine with high humidity. There is a 3mm gap, between the top of the tub, and the ceiling, and i feel this will be enough for air circulation, without needing holes in the tubs. Heating is done by heat mats, underneath, and take up about 25cm of the bottom of the tub.
DVD in one of tubs to show size comparison
Interested in opinions.

Very nice!!! Well made tub racks can easily increase your capacity and are easy to check/clean. Those tubs are similar in size to my tub racks and those are working just fine for my adult males and females as well (just not the larger ones) !!

Looks like your room has come a long way from your "early days"

cheers dave, yeah it getting there. I still planning on fixing the other side with better cages, ive found the ones i want, but moneywise they will have to wait. I think these new cages, will mean i can fit more in, but im also looking at them being not so deep, as the ones i have now, are apporx 80cm deep, and cleaning wise, i nearly have to crawl into them for a good scrub.

What do you class as your big females dave? ie the ones too big for the tubs?

Also at least i pretty much know what my limit for snakes is now, as i have no more room. The girlfriend has stated quiet clearly that the snakes arent leaving the snake room. (i pushed the fact that its my apartment, so i will do what i want. She pointed out its her body, and she will do what she wants Point taken)

Hey Dave, did you have any of your adult females which you keep in the tubs produce for you this year? If so how did that work out?

with your amount of females you going to breed this year, have you not run out of room yet, in those wooden stacks you have? ie having to go to tubs?
