I tried it for awhile and found it to be a pain in the ass i would advise against it. out of all the substrates ive used over the past 22 years cyprus multch is my favorite.

Hi there!
I've used indoor/outdoor (astroturf type - "grass-like" in a few different setups over the years. The carpeting some pet product manufacturers have out can be suitable, too. It is eye-pleasing and safe, but like "biv" mentioned, can be a pain in the...... uhm,... long run. It's something else that has to be cleaned.

If you have just a few cages and they're a type of showcase, it's not much of a problem and can be worthwhile. I suggest having two pieces so that you can put one in the cage after cleaning and then have time to clean & dry the other one for the next swap out/cleaning.

Pros:
* Eye-pleasing
* A slight form of insulation from the cage bottom (depends on the setup as to whether or not this is a factor, but it usually can help a little)

Cons:
* Another object that needs cleaning
* Does not aid humidity much, like cypress mulch or aspen bedding can.
* Does not offer as much insulation from the cage floor as most wood bedding can.

Since I mentioned insulation of the cage bottom let me go ahead & mention - if using tanks/aquariums, the best way to insulate the cage bottom is by cutting a piece of foam insulation board to fit snuggly underneath the tank. If using an under-tank heat source, be sure to leave a small gap between the foam board and the heat source. All of my tanks' bottoms are lined with 1/2-inch thick DOW blue foam insulation board.

Sorry for getting so deep into this, I just like to try to be thorough, too often.

What type of carpeting are you considering?

Best wishes!
HH

Another big con and one of the main reasons i stopped using it was cleanleness once an animal defficates on it it is impossible to fully clean and sterialize it again. after only a few weeks of use it has a very worn look to it expecially due to urates getting caked into the fibers. I agree with HH if you are going to use it have one or two back up pieces but all and all i would recoment against it. and NEVER use it with vegetiarian species of herps at they can easily mistake it for food witch can lead to getting compacted and a heafty vet bill to fix the problem even insectivores can injest small pieces when going for prey.

I live in Las Vegas Nv. What I use is newspaper for the whole cage. (I have vision cages) Then in the middle of the cage I use Care Fresh. ( newspaper pulp). that really helps out with the humidity. I have no problem keeping a 70% to 80%in my cages. thats what I do. By the way I am posting for the first time on the form, I have had my snakes for 4 yrs. By the way with the cages I cover up 75% of the air vents with plastic. sorry for so long but I feel that if you get more then one opinion that will help you deside what works for you. hope this helps.

Yes, the beauty of forums working like they should. A variety of opinions to either pick & choose or mix & match.

See ya 'round!

hey, thanks everybody for all of your responses, i was planing on using MULTIPLE pieces and just throwing them away after i washed each piece a few times. i was planing on using a product called huega. it is an imitation zebra hair tight weave short pleat carpet used to cover garage floors they come in squares that are 24"x 24" and i have a custom eight foot by three foot by two foot cage that is strictly a showcase cage, they are always separated during feeding and i clean up after them religiously. i cant remember if i included what they were in the first post so just to clear that up they are three albino burmese pythons. all three of them are pushing nine and a half feet and they are doing great. they have been kept by me since they were just a few weeks old and have never had a problem one. magnificent creatures to work with, absolutely wonderful personalities, never had one of the trio even hiss at me in irratation. anyways.... i digress, thanks again for all of your input guys and happy herping.
