Some recent shots of my 08 stuff....

nodaksnakelover Jan 05, 2009 11:22 PM

Took some recent pics of my 08 Pits. First up are my Northern Pines. Starting with my female hold back from my giant Big Girl, seven feet of pure puppy dog! Though as a baby she was awful! I felt this was the year to hold back a pair of her kids as she's going to be nine this year. Here is her little clone...

And here is her brother. He doesn't seem to carry as much red as his mother or sister. But he's very much a pretty high contrast classic looking Northern Pine. And he has none the attitude his sister usually shows...

And here's a single shot of a female I kept back from my other older female who is more of the high white look. And just doesn't have that pretty red wash the other female and her young have. But it's this black and white type that so many want. So I keep both lines around.

Here is her brother. The clutch this year had five that I so badly wanted to keep. But, I talked myself out of keeping the group and here is the male I held back. Interesting how he's got seriously reduced pattern... And I notice that every time I see this, such snakes are always males.

Here's most of my 08 bullsnake purchases...one was in shed so didn't make photos...

All of these are stillwater hypos. Some are that by purity to the bloodline, others are just that line of hypo...but from an outcrossed mother.... Good luck guessing which ones are what!

Jason,
these are all out of John Meltzer's stock. John says they are New Jersey Pine Barrens stock. To what exact county, now that I don't know and at the time wasn't so specifically important. Especially considering how big a range a male pine can have! But I know some were from Ocean County, and the others were from Burlington County. Thanks for the compliment! I smile every time I open up their little tubs and peek in! Myself, I prefer the more classic look, where yes, you have the high black and white contrast but also show the red here and there. Plain black and white just isn't as nice in my book. I want that, I'll grab me a newspaper... he he he...

picture below is one of the grandparents of the babies that John had into their early twenties before they passed on. Gorgeous and HUGE snakes!

Astounding! Thanks for posting and hope you're enjoying your winter.

Just got my first Northern Pines this year, an '07 and an '08. Absolutely awesome animals - the ultimate colubrids. Also got my first Stillwaters...maybe even more ultimate...sort of

My rusty '07 female started out very hissing but has become a puppy dog.

The '08 male is showing much higher contrast even though the light here is pretty warm.

Here's my fugly '08 Stillwater male.

And the even fuglier female, but she's got an awesome personality

beautiful snakes you have there!

Russell! Unbelievable northerns!! The Meltzer line is my fave!!

Now, since you also have non locale but gorgeous northerns as well from other people, if it were myself, I would keep all lines separate in all breedings, to keep all lines established with their killer characteristics!!!

Keep posting pics!!

Billy! Your right, this one pair I have from someone else are just as nice but no, they won't be crossed with the Meltzer stock. In fact I just might sell off the generic pair. Cause I have no real way of knowing if they are in fact New Jersey locale. Heck they might have a little southern pine in them for all I know! I just have the two though. Otherwise all my Northern Pines are from John.

This year I hope to make a couple lines out of John's stuff. Big Girl, is from my original pair that I got. And she's from a pair that is seperate from the other adult pair that I have.

Where the other adult pair that I have are from John's last original female crossed to a young male from one of the other original pairs that he had held back. And I have another younger pair that are siblings to the adult pair.

But I've yet to get viable eggs from this younger female. Yet I won't let her go for anything cause of her fantastic white background. The young male lost a hemipene last year. So both that young female and another young female from the older sibling pair did not lay fertile eggs.

This year the young female will be bred to the older sibling male for the first time. Where the older sibling pair's daughter will again be bred to the now single hemipene male. And I'm hoping that he's still going to breed just fine with that single hemipene. The two older girls are being bred to the older sibling male as they were last year.

At least, that is how I've planned it to go! John sold me a male last year from a pair he got back from a customer that were out of his stock. So I do have an upcoming male from his line that is somewhat unrelated to what I already have. What I don't know, is if he's related to Big Girl or the sibling pairs... Regardless, he'll be taking the single hemipene male's place if he's unable to get the job done this spring.

I've got another five weeks yet before my adults come upstairs to start warming up. I'm getting excited again after this nice little break from so many chores. And looking forward to another spring of snake eggs and hopefully, if all goes well, a bunch of heads peeking out sometime in June!
