Stenodactylus Petrii Hatchlings

Mattkot Sep 09, 2003 04:04 PM

I was quite surprised to find two hatchings in my tank in the last few days. I noticed the female becoming swollen several months ago but she didn't appear gravid or "candle" with eggs in her abdomen. During an overdue cage cleaning last night two of the smallest lizards I'd ever seen scampered out from under some debris. Their eggs were found under a stone adjacent to a live cactus in the terrarium.

Without knowing how long they'd been in there, I'm going to guess that they hatched within the last week as I enjoy watching the adults eat and had never seen the young ones before. Temps were a pretty constant mid 70's range for anyone looking to emulate my in situ incubation.

Both babies took pinhead crickets and did the tail waving thing like the adults. I've separated them out into their own small terrarium and they seem to be doing great. A couple of questions for everyone.

1. Sexing the adults: Spurs like those of Coleonyx seem to be VERY small, any other distinguishing characteristics? One of the adults has developed large sacs at the base of it's neck (reminds me of female Day Geckos) could this be calcium deposits and thus be the female?

2. Supplements for the hatchlings, yes or no?

3. Age to breeding size?

They've been fun little pets and it was quite a surprise to see these two little babies appear out of nowhere. I'll try and post some pictures soon.

1. Before i bought mine, i always thought the males only chirp, but later found out they both do. Males have obvious bulges at the base of their tail. They also have those pre anal pores, but i doubt you'll see any on an animal that small (like you said). The sacs might be calcium deposits, but my female never had any, so im not sure about that. (i dust every other feeding).

2. Yes, definately. Id try to supplament the hatchlings every once in a while.

3. ....not sure about breeding size, but i always like to go by a 10 month old minimum rule, for small geckos.
