My weird girl

drewby07 Jan 06, 2009 07:17 AM

Hi all -

I got this girl back in the spring of 08...and she has done pretty well for me. I was told when I got her that she is 66% pos het VPI axanthic. I decided to introduce her to my male to see if she would breed...and they locked up immediately. Looking at them together really shows just how DIFFERENT she looks....I have more pics if anyone would like to see them.

Any thoughts?

She's real pretty. Definitely a keeper. I love how her deep black has perfect little white/silver linings around it. If she makes axanthics, I bet they'd be killer.

Does anyone think she looks axanthic? Now the guy I got her from is saying she might not be het for axanthic...she might actually BE axanthic.....but I don't know..

I guess it could be possible. She has some very Axanthic-like characteristics. Than again, she could just be an exceptional looking normal or het. And a regular looking het for Axanthic wouldn't be visual, at least I've never heard of one.

But seriously...

How did the guy go from telling you its a POSSIBLE het Axanthic to now being a visual Axanthic?? How do you screw that up?? If she is a visual and you paid a poss het price, awesome for you. But it sounds super fishy to me, and I'd throw some credibility down the drain. I guess only breeding her will tell if she's got the genetics or not.

Well I bought the snake this summer from a local guy on Craigslist...who said he got it at a reptile show locally. He wasn't the best with genetics...and at the time he actually told me the snake was "66% axanthic" which I assumed meant 66% possible het....but people around here throw around all sorts of odd genetic talk...so who knows what he meant. I paid $40 for her...thinking she was a breeding sized normal...and not really paying a whole lot of attention to her coloration til I saw her side by side with my normal male...then the difference was pretty pronounced. I dunno....we'll see what pops up!

Well she looks normal to me although a very nice normal. She shouldn't have any yellow or gold if she was.

Well even if she is het axanthic, breeding her to a normal would only produce more normals 50% possible het axanthics. They'd all look the same. Unless, that male your breeding he too is also het axanthic?
Nothing wrong with a clutch of normals, regardless. Good luck!

I know...a whole clutch of normal are fine with me! I guess I just thought she looked a lot more unusual than she really does....but doesn't everyone?!

Fatjay is right. no matter whether or not she is a visual axanthic or a 66% posible het you will have to breed her out to prove her to be axanthic by breeding her back to one of her sons. IMHO I thought axanthic untill I seen the second photo that shows her tail and it has yellowish on it, but if you paid 40 for a poss het axanthic you did very well, besides the fact that she is truly georgous and looks like an axanthic how much can you ask for fer 40 bucks lol nice animal.
