Update on the enclosure....

jpk4 Jan 06, 2009 05:45 PM

It's huge...the girlfriend likes it but its still in construction so the snake hasn't gotten to check it out yet.

I ended up going way bigger than i thought it would be. I went with 3'x3.5'x20" (lxhxw). It's made with mdf and has a glass door on the front. Right now we're working on sculpting fake rock background out of 2" rigid insulation and i think it'll look sweet.

Next i need to figure out all the heating and lighting stuff and then i'll try take some pics for you guys.

Thanks for all the help with the planning.

Can't wait for pics either! I'm thinking this is going to be a rather naturalistic environment?

It'll be pretty naturalistic, at least that's what we're trying to go for. The only thing we really did that isn't naturalistic is carved the snakes name in with rocks, should look cool though. I gotta find some thick branches and maybe pick up some vine things from petland. I'm also thinking about making my own waterfall...she has one of those eco terra ones or something, but it doesn't work really good and i think i can make better one.

It will be a lot of work though. Waterfalls gather bacteria rather quickly and has to be cleaned frequently.
I like the idea of the snakes name imprinted in the cage..a lot :D

Hmm, maybe I'll just stick with the one she has then.

mattciupak Jan 07, 2009 05:57 PM

The Exo-Terra ones are bacteria farms really. Unless it will be some real display cage and you are willing to clean it at least twice a week, then you don't actually need the waterfall.

IMO you could still build your own and just incorporate a nice aquarium filter. This way you can have the best of both worlds, a better waterfall and cleaner water.

I used a varathane diamond outdoor furniture clear coat. I looked at a number of places for the diamond elite but couldn't find it. As for the door it's a swinging door with acrylic glass insert, i might put some weatherstripping around it yet, but we'll see how hard it is to get the humidity up where it needs to be first.
