Most of the cape gophers I've had, had attitude problems. They hissed & they struck (w/their mouth's open - no bluff). I had no problems feeding them though.

Not the best pit to start with.

What feeding regimen do you have him on? How often are you trying to feed him?

What temps are you keeping him? It sounds like he may be too warm.

Cape gophers are sensitive snakes, and from what I know, like cooler temps.

I offer him a fuzzy mouse once a week but,he eats about half that often. The room he's in stays at about 68 to 70 degrees and he has a heat rope under one end of his box which he stays on alot. Thanks! Jeff

Do you know what the temp is for the heat rope?

Other than that, my only thought would be that the snake may want smaller fuzzies than is what being offered, or he may want live. Capes are sensitive animals.

Hey!, I tried a live hopper mouse and he took it immediately! Thanks! Jeff

A friend of mine, Andy Beleny who works with a lot of Pituophis went against the norm and started keeping his Capes warmer than was recommended and had much more success that way. Maybe we'll be lucky enough and he can add to the discussion.
